Sailor Moon is a worldwide phenomenon that began in the early ’90s. It started as a manga series written by Naoko Takeuchi, which was later adapted into an anime series.
The manga is published in Japan by Kodansha (full name: Kobunsha Co., Ltd.) in their monthly manga anthology, Nakayoshi. It began its run in May 1991 and had been running ever since. The anime, produced by Toei Animation, aired from 1992 to 1997 with 200 episodes plus three movies (one of which is a remake) and two short specials. The anime was shown on TV Asahi in Japan and dubbed into English by DIC Entertainment for North American distribution. This dubbing company also dubbed the Sailor Moon video games (yes, there are several games).
The characters were designed by Takeuchi Naoko, while the storyline was created by a team of writers including Takeshi Kanda (author of works such as Key Hunter), Mariko Mochizuki (author of works such as Sukeban Deka), and Toshio Masuda (author of works such as Devil Hunter Yohko).

Sailor Moon Plot
The main character of the series is a 14-year-old girl named Usagi Tsukino (nicknamed Sailor Moon). She lives with her mother and father in a typical Tokyo apartment building. Usagi has lots of friends, including Ami Mizuno, Rei Hino, Makoto Kino, Minako Aino (who later becomes Sailor Venus), and Luna. Usagi is not popular at her school, but she does have a few friends. Her best friend is Naru Osaka. Naru’s brother, Umino, is crazy about Sailor Moon too.
Usagi and her friends have many typical teenage problems, plus the fact that they must fight evil. This evil comes in the form of an alien called Metalia. Metalia is looking for humans to infest and turn into her kind. She has been able to find only a few humans, though, because Sailor Moon and her friends are excellent fighters. But one day, they find out that Usagi’s classmates, Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako, are also Sailor Senshi (Sailor Scouts). They include Sailor Mercury (Ami), Sailor Mars (Rei), Sailor Jupiter (Makoto), and Sailor Venus (Minako). Now the four girls who make up the Sailor Senshi have a much better chance at defeating Metalia!
These monsters attack Tokyo every once in a while, so it’s up to the girls to stop them. While fighting these monsters, the Senshi learn about their pasts as well as their future destinies.

List of filler episodes for Sailor Moon in chronological order – Learn if it is worth watching
Episode 2: A Mysterious Sleeping Illness: Protect the Girls in Love
This episode is a very short filler episode, set within the first season. It is a story focusing on Naru and Usagi. The episode begins with the girls in class talking about eternal sleep, which causes people to fall into a coma-like state, including Ms. Haruna and Naru. The girls wonder what has happened to Ms. Haruna and why she is so sleepy, while Umino suggests that it could be something to do with the curse of Eternal Sleep.
Ms Haruna goes missing from the school, causing much concern for her students; however they soon find out that she has fallen asleep during a meeting with her teacher, Ms Kino. Usagi then suggests that they go visit her to see how she is doing at home. While visiting Ms Haruna at home, Usagi decides to try and help her by waking her up; unfortunately this causes her to react violently and makes everyone believe that she is possessed by a demon or an evil spirit; however it turns out that Ms Haruna has fallen asleep because of a sleeping sickness called Sleeping Beauty Syndrome (SBS).
The episode ends when Luna wakes up Naru after she falls asleep over Usagi’s lap during class time!
This is a very short filler episode, which basically explains what SBS is, and how it effects people. It also allows the viewer to see more of Naru’s character, and how she acts when she isn’t with Usagi, Minako, Ami or Rei. I also found this episode very interesting to watch as it was based on the popular story, Sleeping Beauty (or in Japan, Jorougumo).
I found that this episode was actually really funny at times; for example when Usagi tries to wake up Ms. Haruna by shouting at her, and she reacts violently and kicks her in the face! I also really liked how Naru acted towards Usagi in this episode, she seems very caring towards her and looks after her a lot more than she does with the others.
I would recommend watching this filler episode as it is only about 20 minutes long and it does add a little bit more to the plot of the series.
Episode 4: Learn How to Be Skinny from Usagi
Ami, Rei and Makoto visit a gym with Usagi to check out a new weight-loss program that’s so popular that they have to get there at 6am to secure a spot. The first ten minutes of the episode is a montage of people trying to lose weight by working out.
Ami, Rei and Makoto arrive at the gym, where the trainer demonstrates how special brain wave headphones are supposed to make you lose your appetite by emitting brain waves that will send you into a state of extreme hunger. They try it out on Mars, but it doesn’t work for her. She just wants food. The girls then go into an explanation about how difficult it is to control your eating because the brain controls everything in your body.
This is a filler episode because it’s a long drawn out and slow paced episode. They could have summarized this episode into a five minute segment. Instead, they decided to stretch out the plot by having about ten minutes of the girls talking about brain waves and how they’re supposed to make you lose your appetite.
For example, the girls could have demonstrated how the brain waves worked by having Ami wear the headphones and eat a slice of pizza. Then Rei would ask her if she feels hungry, and she would answer, “no”. It would have made for a much more interesting episode.
Episode 5: Scent of a Monster: Chanela Will Steal Your Love
Usagi and Luna meet a couple of new friends when the Chanella hypnotize them into buying them. While the rest of the Sailor Senshi go to find out more about this strange new creature, Luna goes to the pet store in search for a cure for Shingo and Mika’s addiction. The owner of the pet store has a theory that the Chanella can only be defeated by an even stronger scent, that of another animal. Luna brings back a rabbit and uses it to weaken the Chanella’s power, allowing her to free everyone from their hypnosis.
This episode is filler because it is unnecessary to develop any character or plot line. It is completely laughable and has no merit whatsoever when you aren’t watching it with children. This episode doesn’t even belong in the same time slot as Sailor Moon. The only reason why this episode is canon is because of the Sailor Moon R movie. But that was made after the show ended. This episode was made to be the original filler episode of Sailor Moon, before it got taken over by the monster of all anime filler, Sailor Moon R.
Episode 6: Protect the Melody of Love: Usagi Plays Cupid
Usagi is sitting in the park listening to a tape that Mamoru gave her. It is a demo tape for a music producer who is looking for new musicians. She gets bored with it and starts doodling on her album with a pen. Luna walks up behind her and asks if she has finished listening to the music, but Usagi hasn’t because the sound of the music is getting distorted every time there’s some kind of static on the tape.
Luna asks what she’s been doing and Usagi shows her the pen drawing she created on the cover of the CD. Luna thinks it looks horrible and reminds Usagi that this CD is going to be sold to people who will listen to it. Usagi tells her that the picture of roses on the cover was bothering her, so she decided to doodle over it. Luna thinks that its better and tells Usagi that she should show this drawing to Mamo-chan when he comes by later.
This is a filler episode because the video is an idea that was created for a filler episode. In the original Sailor Moon anime, there were episodes that were created solely to promote merchandise, or in this case, a CD.
It would have been better if they had included some original animation for this episode because it would have made it less boring and could have given the viewer more of a reason to watch it. They could have at least put Usagi listening to the tape in another room so that they didn’t have her just sitting there staring at the tape player when they first show it. As shown above in the episode guide, nothing happens up until the scene where Luna talks to Usagi about her doodle.
This filler episode was not very good and it doesn’t even make sense that they would put something like this on TV because people would be able to tell its not an animation but just artwork on top of a CD cover. This is also a type of episode where you can tell what’s going to happen before it even happens because you can see what’s going on as soon as you put on your TV.
Episode 7: Usagi Learns Her Lesson: Becoming a Star is Hard Work
Usagi and Shingo are fighting over the remote. Naru enters, and Shingo accuses her of making his ears bleed with her singing. He leaves, saying he’ll get even with Naru. Usagi feels bad for her friend, and decides to help Naru become a superstar by entering a talent contest, which Naru enjoys.
Umino suggests that Usagi dress as a rabbit for the contest, as the real Mikan is dressed as one on a poster outside of their school. Luna suggests they sing “Moonlight Densetsu” for their act, but Usagi can’t sing well enough to perform it well enough in public. The two decide to make an animal act instead, and Usagi asks Luna if she can be a rabbit while she dances around her. Umino draws a rabbit on Luna so she can be a rabbit.
This is a filler episode, because it was made to make the show more interesting, and also to fill gaps in the storyline. Also, it shows a common problem that Usagi has with her friends, and how she tries to make up for it.
Episode 9: Usagi’s Disaster: Beware the Clock of Confusion
Usagi and Ami notice a clock in the window of a store on their way to school. The clock is running at a faster rate than the normal time. It’s supposed to be 7:00, but Usagi and Ami are late for school. Usagi goes home, where she realizes that her watch has also changed the time. She goes back out to meet Ami, who is growing suspicious about the time change, and they go investigate further. They discover that all of the clocks in town have become fast-running. The girls find themselves unable to determine how much time has passed and realize they are running late for school.
They arrive at school just seconds before class begins, but everyone else is already in their seats and very angry with them for being late again. The teacher asks why they’re late, but Ami doesn’t have an answer for her as she can’t tell if it’s 8:00 or 12:00! She becomes very confused and starts to grow faint; Usagi takes her hand and tries to help her sit down but Ami won’t sit down because she’s afraid she’ll fall asleep since everyone around her is asleep! Usagi asks Umino what time it is but he’s also confused. Usagi wonders why they can’t understand what time it is, and Ami realizes that the clocks are running fast. She asks them to take her to the clock store, and when they do, she realizes that all of the clocks in the store are fast running as well.
This is a filler episode because it does not involve any elements of Sailor Moon. It is used as a bridge between the Dark Kingdom Arc and the Black Moon Arc. This episode doesn’t feature any of the Sailor Scouts, nor does it feature any of the characters from either arc.
