List of filler episodes for Gintama in chronological order – Learn if it is worth watching
Episode 1 & 2: You Guys!! Do You Even Have a Gintama? (Part 1 & 2) – aired 04/04/2006
The original manga sequence is that the history of each characters unfolds as the story progresses. While this filler is the opposite: Gintama, Shinpachi, Kagura and Sadaharu are together and the other characters were already acquainted with the gang for some time.
It will still give a short introduction of each new character that appears per scene. Their approach to opening the anime is consistent with the overall impression of someone who read the manga first: unconventional. Gintama is known for a lot of parodies and out of the box jokes you won’t easily find in other shounen mangas.
Episode 50 – Pending Means Pending, It’s Not Final – aired 04/05/2007, Start of Season 2
It was Gintama’s second year of anime and Season 2 so the production wants to put some boost in it! The characters suggested changing the genre of story to attract more viewers as the ratings started to drop after the launch of the anime.
This episode by far, has the most number of parodies to a LOT (anime, classical stories, movies and even a cooking show) that it is scary to imagine how the producers were brave enough to put up this episode opening Season 2. As an anime fan who loves cross overs, this is quite a laugh and there will be at least 3 or more shows you will recognize as you watch it (like how they came up with a movie title: Gin Tama the Movie: DragonBleaPiece). There are more characters involved in this filler than episodes 1 and 2, and they are creatures (coz not everyone is human BTW) who appeared in the previous season.
Episode 57: Keep an Eye On the Chief for The Day – aired 05/17/2007
A story on Otsuu-chan being the commander of Shinsengumi for a day to raise the latter’s reputation in Edo. Just literally a filler episode but really funny especially how the Shinsengumi tried to follow all the demands from the kidnappers of Otsuu-chan. If you like Okita and Hijikata, this episode is a must watch.
Episode 75: Don’t Complain About Your Job at Home, Do It Somewhere Else – aired 09/27/2007
In the first season, Gintama has no half-season special and apparently, they decided to have one this time. The first opening song is different from regular episodes as they used Otsuu-chan’s debut song, “Your mother is Chome-Chome” and you will notice that there is a beep sound when she sang the “Chome-chome” part. Nothing special on this because it is literally a recap episode where the staff of Yorozuya reminisce key scenes from season 1 up to recent of that time. It also shows a bit about the mangaka’s random musings as well as preview of the incoming movie that year. There is a plot twist special for those who likes Takasugi, the only part worth watching here.
Episode 106: Love Is Often Played Out in Sudden Death – aired 05/15/2008
With the anime’s rising popularity being attributed to its schedule airing before Prince of Tennis on TV, Gintama decided to have a sport episode in the form of soccer. As expected, Team FC Oedo does not follow the soccer rules during their live play but that’s what make it interesting. Soccer is war… indeed.
Episode 114: They Say Soy Sauce On Pudding Tastes Like Sea Urchin, But Soy Sauce On Pudding Only Tastes Like Pudding and Soy Sauce – aired 07/10/2008
A filler episode with no real reason but just you know… to fill. Papa-rin aka Matsudaira wants to keep the guys hitting his daughter away and Hijikata stepped in to take the job of his superior. But something came up which needed the professional help of Yorozuya. Say hello and farewell to the Prince of Planet Mayo Maniac in this episode.
Episode 124: When Nagging Goes Too Far It Becomes Intimidating – aired 09/18/2008
Filler inserted during the mid-year of Gintama anime which is about Otsuu-chan’s crisis as an idol. After the end credits, is a classroom scene of the characters talking about different movies and games that had their third launch. The episode is kind of boring and highly recommended to skip.
Episode 125: Entering The Final Chapter! – aired 09/25/2008
Another filler episode after the earlier week being a filler, too. An upfront scam (as Kagura mentioned here) to bait viewers that the anime is reaching its final chapter while in the middle of year 3 airing. It is a recap episode where the Yorozuya staff talks about past scenes they did including the opening scene from episode 3 that they had shown in the previous recap episodes. This is fine to skip.
Episode 135: Before Worrying About the Earth, Think About the Even More Endangered Future of ‘Gintaman’ – 12/04/2008
A cross over of Gintama and the manga’s editor, Daito as they try to resolve the losing popularity of Gintaman. It is kind of similar with the filler episode 50 where they try to change the genre of the anime including the drawing style to match it.
Episode 137: 99% Of Men Aren’t Confident in Confessing Their Love – aired 12/18/2008
Yorozuya team explained at the beginning the full reason of this filler but to make it short, because there is no Japan World series this year they are 1 story short to broadcast. In this episode, you will learn about the following words: Onion Knight and 1LDK.
Episode 150: If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them – aired 03/26/2009
The opening mentioned the sudden end of Sunrise producing the anime due a financial crisis of the said company. And so they have no choice but to abruptly show the ending episode of year 4 to the viewers… in different versions. It is sickening to watch repeat scenes but changes per version according to what they want.
Episode 155: The Other Side of the Other Side of the Other Side Would Be the Other Side – aired 04/30/2009
A story featuring the not-so-inspirational Hasegawa and his series of unfortunate events. Watch as he pitifully bets his underpants and 300 yen to get away from the DORK (Dumb Old Retarded Kook) status. This is a filler that you can skip anytime.
Episode 164: That Matsutake Soup Stuff Tastes Better Than the Real Deal – aired 07/02/2009
No particular reason mentioned as to why they have fillers this time but there are 2 stories in this episode with the latter being a parody of Doraemon. It is one of those rare episodes that Shinpachi gets to have more screen time than the rest of Team Yorozuya.
Episode 166: Two Is Better Than One. Two People Are Better Than One – aired 07/16/2009
A typical filler episode that must be watched because Gintama and Hijikata are stuck together with hand cuffs for a day. One of the best filler stories in the anime with a lot of laughs involving two of the most loved characters in the Gintama universe.
Episode 171: You’ll Get Sued If All You Do Is Copy Others – aired 08/20/2009
In commemoration to Gundam’s 30th year anniversary who belongs to the same animation studio (Sunrise), Gintama made a special episode filler. Multiple parodies about Gundam were made throughout the episode but knowing this anime, they won’t just settle with one anime for their gag jokes.
Episode 173: It’s What’s On the Inside That Counts – aired 09/03/2009
Episode 166 features Gintama and Hijikata while this episode is about Zura, also known as Katsura, who is also part of the Old Jouishishi (the anti Amanto samurai faction at the beginning). It is a two-part filler, too where the latter story is about Sadaharu and Gin-san switching bodies. This month was unusual as there are three filler episodes aired and by far the highest number in Gintama’s animation history.
Episode 174: Are There Still People Who Go to The Ocean and Yell Out ‘Bakayaro’? – aired 09/10/2009
Another filler episode after previous week and also a two-part story involving Hasegawa, Team Yorozuya and a random office worker. The stories are too far from each other and skippable because they do not have any impact in the original flow of story.
Episode 176: Countdown Begins – aired 09/24/2009
The gang was talking about earlier filler episodes 125 and 150 on how they had baited viewers on Gintama’s fake ending. This is due to this episode’s title, “Countdown Begins” but the content is more of a recap episode featuring the best Gintama lines, Beat Crusader’ single for the anime – ‘Wo Ai Ni’, and Prince Hata volunteering to voice over in the countdown. He was responsible in re-doing the voice over of Takasugi from filler episode 75.
Episode 185: Hometowns and Boobs Are Best Thought from Afar – aired 11/28/2009
Filler was an obvious parody on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie where Hijikata tries everything in his power as a Shinsengumi to find the Mayorin ticket. The second part is about Yorozuya takes on removing a big bee hive in the temple. An episode not relevant to the main story either but has a lot funny scenes… and parodies.
Episode 209: Nothing Lasts Forever, including Parents, Money, Youth, Your Room, Dress Shirts, Me, You, and the Gintama Anime – aired 05/23/2011
Opening scene of the episode was ambiguous and there was even a trailer of what looks like a movie being produced but when you check the internet, there wasn’t… It was a good thing the characters were honest in this episode. There was also a parallel story with Takasugi as the main character at the end.
Episode 252: We’re Sorry – aired 03/26/2012
The costumes of Team Yorozuya here is the same as what they’ve worn in episode 209 filler and sitting in a kotatsu. This was an apology for all the parodies, references outside the anime and how these caused a lot of trouble to the production for the past 6 years. Key characters tried to show their sincerity in their own way while reminiscing the things they should apologize for. The filler was also a closing episode as the anime production ends and promised the viewers for a better Gintama series soon. After 6 months, the anime series resumed airing on TV Tokyo.
Episode 367: There Are Lines Even Villains Can’t Cross – aired 10/08/2018
An episode divided into two parts where the latter is the filler explaining why the anime had ended. Since this was expected to be the final episode at that time, there were a lot of character appearances including the mangaka discussing the sudden ending.
As of writing, Gintama The Final was released in Japan last 01/08/2021. No other fillers were released after episode 367. Gintama is considered one of the main streams in anime community and having a very low filler percentage during its broadcast is uncommon if compared to other popular titles. Some fillers were used to explain certain topics affecting the manga and not being a filler itself for the anime.
